I define "fine cinema" as movies with excellent musical scores, great scenery (including the physical film quality), a meaningful plot, and superb actors and actresses. Good movies come out of Hollywood, even though many "family" oriented organizations would have you believe otherwise. "Tumbleweeds," "Where the Heart Is," "The Big Hit," and the Spiderman series are three such examples. My main genre of interest, though, centers on comedy, drama, and foreign classic films. I'm a big fan of Peter Sellers, especially those non-Pink Panther features (e.g., Dr. Strangelove and I Love You, Alice B. Tokias). I also enjoy the fine acting of Jack Lemmon, Rock Hudson, Doris Day, Paul Newman, and Steve McQueen. Pedro Almovodar is one of my favorite directors. These days, I watch most movies on DVD, for I enjoy wide-screen. Click here for a discussion on wide-screen format. I enjoy watching older television shows, such as The Rockford Files, The Jeffersons, I Dream of Jeannie, Hawaii Five-O, and Murder, She Wrote. I have great respect for Norman Lear, Stephen Cannell, and Leonard Freeman who produced some of these shows. Some of the more interesting modern shows include NCIS, NUMBRS, and the Bionic Woman. DVDs have made a lot of classic TV programming available, without the few minutes spliced by cable networks. |
